“Celebracion de la Hispanidad” Special Art Exhibit opens Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008 at the St. Lucie County Historical Museum
In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month the St. Lucie County Historical Museum has partnered with Hispanics in Action Inc. to open its newest special art exhibit, Celebracion de la Hispanidad, on Tuesday September 2nd, 2008. The exhibit will run until September 28th with an opening reception for the public to be held on September 5th from 5:30-7:30pm featuring renowned pianist and flutist Ms. Shazkya D. Fernandez.
The exhibit will feature over 50 works of art that reflect the diversity and culture of the Hispanic world including paintings from Ruby Cabrera and Mario Mutis from Colombia, Carmen Tomasian from Peru, Rosa Peña from Chile, Ethel Rowland and Lydi Pallares from United States as well as sculptures from Eduardo Gomez of Columbia.
Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18. Hispanic, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, refers to Spanish-speaking people in the U.S. of any race. On the 2000 Census form, more than 35 million people reported themselves as Hispanic or Latino.
Visit the St. Lucie County Historical Museum and explore the Celebracion de la Hispanidad special exhibit as well as the museum’s 16 permanent exhibits of local history and the 1908 Register-Gardner House. The St. Lucie County Historical Museum is located at 414 Seaway Drive, under the South Bridge on Museum Pointe in Fort Pierce. Since its opening in 1968 the museum has provided educational programming and permanent and special exhibits that explore the county’s rich and colorful history. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10am-4pm. Admission is: $4 for adults, $3.50 for seniors over 65, and $1.50 for children 6-17 years and students. Children under 6 are free. The St. Lucie Historical Society meets the fourth Thursday of every month for dinner, short business meeting, and guest speaker.
Dinner begins at 5:30 and costs $10.00.
